a fire gut add famous berkeley church. and less than 11 hours from ryan vogelsong takes the mound for the giants, trying to keep the team aleve in the national league championship series. good morning, everyone. thanks for joining us. i'm carolyn tyler. let's start things out with a quick first look at the weather. here's our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi there, carolyn. good morning, everyone. bow, is it cold out there. they are talking about temperatures this morning of that dropped into the lower 40s. in the north bay valleys temperatures are mainly in the 40s. we have a few clouds around with holes in the overcast. we will call it partly cloudy allowing for temperatures to drop further.

by the middle of the afternoon numbers will be in the 60s. the clouds on the increase. we will be looking at a cool evening tonight. but you have probably heard, eve advertised some rain in the days ahead. clouds will thicken and we will look for that chance of showers. looks like we are going to see a pretty wet monday morning commute. i'll have the timing four coming up. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. the giants are back home this morning preparing for another do-or-die situation. tonight they host the st. louis cardinals in game six of the national league championship series. karen is live at&t park where giants fans are already getting excited about the prospect of another world series. >> that's right. that excitement will only continue to build at the park today. yesterday we had the scene from the bar across the street from the ballpark. excited fans, as you mentioned, already talking about the world

series, fired up on the heels of the orange and black domination in game five. when the giants returned to san francisco yesterday morning, the manager bruce bochy told us there would be little time to rest for his players, that they would get a light workout in in preparation for today. ynbr radio host said the giants will have to take the game and go to game 7. >> the ultimate game. if the they can get it to a game 7 on monday night, you will see something you haven't seen here in a long, long time. >> there's no other sports receipt now will than baseball in the plaintiffs and the giants and cardinals. >> so recapping, giants and cardinals, game six today. another must-win for the giants or they are done. first pitch is at 4:37:00 p.m. it's ryan vogelsong against chris carpenter. if there's a game 7 it would be here at&t park and that would be

tomorrow here. >> we want to see the pictures you take at your tail get party at the game or at home watching the game with your dog. you can e pail giants and a's fan photos like this one at ureport at kgo tv.com or share them with us on our facebook page or twitter feed. firefighters spent the night making sure a fire did not reignite at a historic church in berkeley. the fire broke out after 10:15 last night. the church dates all the way back to 1878. the flames spread quickly throughout the building. firefighters raced to keep the fire from spreading. >> our focus was to keep it out of the belltower because once that gets started, it creates a collapse problem. >> i mean, i think maybe the pass of the church looks okay, but when it started, when we

looked outside the back of the church was completely in flames. >> fortunately known hurt, but six church interns who live in an adjoining building ended up spending the night somewhere else. they should be able to return to their homes later today. investigators are, of course, trying to figure out what started that fire. about 15 north beach residents evacuated from their home around powell and vallejo streets last night are safely back home this morning. they were forced out this morning when police responded to a man's suicide and a strong chemical smell he is scene. a hazardous materials team ventilated the building and neutralized the chemicals. the red cross was also called to assist until they got the all clear to re-enter the building. another day of delay and detours while the san mateo

bridge is closed for a major construction project. here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. that's where there's been a lot of bottlenecks this weekend. traffic was just crawling along the san francisco approachings to the bay bridge last night. the scene resembles what weekday commuters usually encounter. one took it in stride. >> it was brutal. we made a wrong turn and it was the best thing ever because we were able to by pass a lot of it but once we got on it was just like, agh. they tell us it is on track and the span should reopen at 5:00 tomorrow morning. the work includes replacing a seismic joint per gallon west end of the bridge and replacing twelve concrete slabs that cover 60 feet of roadway. bridge work is on track right now. caltrans crews, as we said, are

replacing seismic joint on the western end of the span. the work includes replacing those twelve slabs of concrete. the teams are working around the clock. now if you need help navigating around the closer, you can download our exclusive abc7 waze traffic app at abc7news.com/waze. new this morning, a magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck along the an san andreas fault. it happened just before midnight. no reports of damage or injuries but it was felt from the central coast to the nevada border and as far north as san jose. at least four aftershocks have occurred this morning, the largest 3.7around 12:37. this morning residents in leak county are back in their homes after a fire evacuation order was lifted. the blaze started thursday. it's now 100% contained.

it described one home and several cars as it burned 300 acres near the town of lower lake. an alert by the principal of piedmont high school has raised concerns among parents n a letter sent last week the principal said his staff found a so-called fantasy slu d-league among students. >> we talk to parents about the letter sent out. in the letter he describes a fantasy slut league in which the female students, unbeknownst to most of them are drafted as part of the league. males earn points by documenting sexual events with female students. an investigation was launched on campus and they learned it has been going on five or six years. the presence pal writes participation often involved pressure, participation by older students that included alcohol

to impair control and social commands to remain popular. i talked to the principal by phone about the letter. >> we want to make sure that parents were aware of things that are going on in their kids' leaves. >> through the course of the day i talk to about a dozen parents with children at piedmont high school. they all told in they are surprised by the letter by the principal describing the fan it iscy slut league but none wanted to talk on camera. they say piedmont is a small town and this is a very sensitive subject. there is one pattern who agreed to talk with me. >> i'm glad there's a strong administration and he's willing to take on these kind of issues. as a mother of four girls, i couldn't be happier. >> piedmont school administrators say they issued the let they are an effort to be proactive. >> the main thing is i don't want to blow it out of proportion. i don't want to make it something that is some big, horrible event that we found out about. >> they are planning a series of campus events about lessons of

preventing this in the future. abc7 fuse. >> a substitute teach in your opinion fairfield has been arrested tore roughing up in 7-year-old students. fairfield police say the 51-year-old joe grabbed the four children by the neck or the throat for miss behaving. none was hurt. it happened wednesday at the elementary school. people there say there had to be another way to handle that situation. >> there's no reason for what he did. he could have gone to any other teacher and who were probably just feet away from them and have them handle the situation. >> he was arrested friday on four counts of batly on a child. he has been released on bail. coming up next, area code confusion. a growing population, plus a lack of phone numbers, equals 11 digit dialing starting in the south bay. and the red and gold are giving back to the community. we will take you inside the 49er academy.

close in 2014. yesterday dozens of people protested. they marched outside the hayward medical center. the protesters say once it shuts down families in hayward, newark and fremont will have to drive quite a ways for inpatient child services. but kaiser said they are working on a facility in oakland that will benefit most customers. >> we're deeply appreciate the care was here and local and the thought of families like ourselves having to go all the way up to roseville, two hours away to get care, it's mind-boggling that we would pay thousands of dollars a year for our kaiser membership and then behold to go hours away when there's care here right now. >> well, kaiser said the nurses working at the hay word medical center will be moved to new positions within the keyser network. we talked a lot about the giants but the 49ers are also making an impact both on and off

the field. our reporter reports on the 49ers academy and how it's making a difference for bay area kids. >> the talent. >> this is the news, 49ers style put on by the children in the media center paid for by gerald rice and mr. young. >> detestsers have lives? >> high-tech studio is one part of the 49ers academy. a public middle school supported by a nonprofit partnership with the 49ers football team. the idea is to make sure that students in low income east palo alto get the same opportunities at kids in wealthier area. >> we serve students that are homeless, that are in foster care. >> the 49s are academy fills in the gaps with extended school day, extracurricular activities, counseling, free afterschool programs and caring adults that don't give up. test scores have gone up each of

the; years. student after student told us the academy is like a family. >> it has a to the of people that are here to help you. >> i get to mentor little kids. i love my school. >> all the extra services cost about $1 million a year, generated through the partnership with the 49ers. john york is co-owner of the team. >> we are a small organization, but we get a lot of notoriety. so when we get involved, you can get other people involved. >> this gala at the home of warriors owner is the school's biggest fundraiser. guests mingle with former players and bid on memorabilia to the tune of $400,000 in donations. quarterback alex smith is a supporter. >> we were all student athletes at one time. it starts in school. school comes first. >> a few lucky students get to attend the party, but the real prize is the 49ers support for that are school. >> having them continue to support us and provide this kind of wrap around services to our children is just incredible.

>> welcome back. this is a live look at the golden gate bridge. not much traffic going on at this tame of the morning. as far as the weather goes, on the marin side of the bridge, cooler with clouds. on the san francisco side, more of the same. temperatures in the upper 60s today. an act of kindness in a retail store has gone viral. it began in a checkout line of a target store in oregon. a struggling family had their credit card denied. and another customer quietly paid the $161 tab.

the family on the receiving end of that generosity only 420 bucks, but the mother used it to pay for the person behind her in line. that person did the sam for the next customer, and the inspired cashier was even more amazed when two teenagers did the same thing. what would i have done as a teenager? i won have thought of passing it on to the next person, but they did. >> well, the cashier shared the is story on her face book page along with the target fan page and within days there were 17,000 comments and almost a quarter million likes. lisa, there are plenty of teenagers out there who would do something nice like that. >> you would like to think so. we are looking at ing about change. it's not going to stec around too long. so it's good news. if you are not anticipating the chill that accompanies these systems. we are looking at the sutro

camera. we can't see much from this vantage point but there are clouds and holes in the overcast. there are partly cloudy conditions. it's a much cooler start and you probably heard we are talking about rain and it continues to head our way, keeping us dry, though, it looks like, for the bulk of the day. live doppler 7 hd right now. well, we are talking, there's a live shot again, and the clouds in the north bay. you will see our sweep here on top of mount saint helena. that's where we will be getting more active tonight where we are looking at rain finally headed our way. take a look at the number. 42 santa rosa, 52 san francisco. that's the warm spot. look at the 40s. all the way down to loss got tas. san jose and the low 50s up by the delta. how much cooler? significantly cooler. you may foal it this morning as you step out, anywhere from 4 to 14 degrees colder this morning. yeah, definitely this morning we

are looking at a more autumn-like picture. in fact throughout the day today with the clouds increasing, yeah, things are going to get a little cool. the on shore flow connection up and the cooler air transported our way, comply minutes of an area of low pressure. a vigorous one for this team of the year, breath rain and wind just in time for the monday morning commute. there's the setup, there the low up well to the north of us. a piece of energy is going to develop from us and eats going to drop south and that will bring the increasing clouds today. and the front unfortunately right in time for the morning commute. the rain will start well after midnight. don't have to worry with that for the giants game but it will be cooler and breezy. here's the timing of it. you will notice the clouds pushing over the bay area through sunday. we may see a few light showers maybe after the nine, ten o'clock hour. but you can see the front still well to the north. by monday there it is. pushing through by mid-to late morning. it's a rapid move sorry we will

get into some sunshine afterwards. but there is yet adopted system headed our way. a smaller one on tuesday. winter storm warning, 10 to 16 inches along the sierra crest with 4 to 8 inches below 7,000 feet. this will be a snowmaker and gusty winds. the east bay hills could see winds up to 20, 25 miles an hour accompanying the system. mid-to upper 60s today. noticeably cooler with the increasing clouds. 67 in watsonville with 64 in salinas. so tonight if you are headed to the giants game, you will notice that the temperatures will be mild to start out with the increasing clouds and then numbers dropping through the 50s. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. talking about anywhere from a quarter to half inch of rain through tomorrow, late afternoon. so a pretty decent system. the next one bringing overneat spotty rain showers. after that it looks like we will warm up and dry out and getting back toward normal because we will be about eight or ten

7-0, spartans. special teams coming up big. it sails high. race is on. chris recovers in the end zone for the spartans. san jose state up 28-0 and they go on to crush texas san antonio. they improve to 5-2 and 1-1 in conference play. all right. the giants are still alive in the nlcs. barry zito made sure of that forcing a game six back at&t park today with ron vogue on the hill. vogelsong kept the cardinals off balance in game two. seven solid innings. walked two and struck out four. manager mike matheny is impressed with what he sees in vogelsong. >> he's got good stuff, he's having strong season and he's been able to make adjustments. that's why he's had the kind ofsen he's had. our guys are going to have to be a little more disciplined in their zone and not miss the mistakes. but he did make a whole lot last time. we will see what kind of adjustments our guys can make between the last start and tomorrow.

libya in the last debate suggested a potential for more fireworks. >> for yen policy doesn't always attract people's attention in campaigns but it is what really matters in a presidency. >> with just over three weeks before election day you could get whip lashed reading the policy. the polls show the race unchanged since yesterday. but in three key battleground midwest states, the president has the lead. >> we don't have all that much data right now, believe it or not. we don't have that much public data. the campaigns have a lot of information. we don't. >> that's why the schedules are the clearest katetors where the race will be decided and both campaigns are narrowing their focus to states like ohio, virginia, iowa and florida as they approach the finish line. cain traverse, abc news, washington. >> the third and final presidential debate take place tomorrow at the linn university in boca raton, 1/2. it starts at 6:00 p.m. you can watch it here on abc7.

a look ahead to the final two weeks of the presidential campaign coming up. can gov. romney close the gap in states where obama still leads? ron emmanuel makes the case for president obama while florida senator marco rubio bow gives mitt romney strategy for taking the white house. don't miss this week with george stephanopoulos this morning at 8:00 right here on abc7. >> in california politics governor jerry brown is making an urgent push for one measure on next month's ballot and against another. members of the california teachers association joined the governor in san francisco to show support for prop 30. it would raise taxes on high income households to support schools and education programs. i say proposition 30 is about jobs because it's about kids and teachers, and they produce the brains and the skills that make the jobs of the

future possible. a competing school spending measure is prop 38. the governor and teachers union are also campaigning against prop 32 which they say will limit teachers' participation in the political process. if you work for the state of california the recession may not have hurt you too badly. at least not in terms of your sal i are. a new study reveals state employees have fared much better in the paycheck department than workers in the private sector. abc7 news capital correspondent nannette miranda reports from sacramento. a new center for government analysis study shows a big discrepancy in paychecks when you compare state workers versus californians on a per capita basis. the doesn'ted state worker wages, including pensions, were roughly $65,000 a year back in 2005. it jumped to $80,000 five years later. a difference of 23%. for the rest of californians,

personal per capita income was almost $39,000 a year, increasing to more than $42,000. a jump of only 10% in the same time period. the tax association fund the research, calling the numbers a dangerous compensation trend. >> this is demonstrating how california miss spent money. the state employees have received compensation increases not found in the private sector, and that's one of the reasons we find ourselves in perennial deficit situations. >> the report concluded had the public sector grew at the same rate as the per capita income levels, the state of california would have saved $2.1 billion, enough to add 25,000 teachers. >> the public employees union descendents agree with the report which they say unfairly labels them as the source of california's budget problem. >> they point out per capita

>> this morning we've got some good news about the environment and it comes in a very cute package. river otters had almost completely vanished from the bay area and now they are making something of a comeback. abc7 news anchor dan ashley has this morning's assignment 7 report. 7:00 a.m. in the marin head lands. a perfect team for a family swim. in is a lagoon where volunteers are looking for otters. >> i've seen an otter every time i've bp out here. >> these are river otters that need pressure water to survive. they go in freshwater occasion neal but don't confuse them with their cousin the sea otter who spend most of their time in the ocean. river otters used to be in every creek in the bay area but they disappeared. >> partially because of hunt asking trapping but also because of a lot of our water sheds were in terrible disrepair and there was no much pollution. >> this map shows the known otter territory in is the 95.

notice almost no otters in the bay area. but years of work to clean our waterways appear to be paying off. the otters are back. >> all the otters that we see look really healthy and well-fed. >> megan is a naturalist who helped launch the river otter ecology project >> turns out there's almost nothing known about their populations or their rain knowledge. >> megan and other volunteers known at otter spotters are combing the bay area looking for evidence to add to the science. >> there's a little trail going in there. >> they take photos and videos which they post on their web seat. an interactive map on the site shows the locations of more than 150 otters spotted around the bay area in the last year. the to otter ecology project set up motion activated cameras to catch otters in action when people are not around during the day and at night. river otters actually spend quite a bit of time on land. they are very social and they leak to play. but they aren't always good at

sharing. one volunteer caught this video of an otter stealing a fish from his buddy. cute as they are, they are fierce and have a strong bite so you should not get too close to them. even so, the people who do this kind of otter stalking get hooked on it. >> and i can't help it. they are really cool. >> he is a biology researcher with u.c. berkeley. hillary is an otter keeper at the san francisco zoo. andrea works with the attars at the oakland zoo. even though they get paid to take care of otters in captivity, they choose to spend their free time searching for wild otters. >> this is exactly what i want to do, what i am interested in but i don't have the means or ability to do it on my own. >> a small amount of trank anyone can join the team. in addition to look for actual otters, you search for clues kateing how the animals use their habitat. otters have big, web feet that leave descendents tingetive track. >> if you come closer and look,

you can see a perfect animal trail going up there. if you are able to be an animal and scoot through this little hole and up the hill, you would find a lot of trails like this. >> there are several animals using the hillside but the team can going out if otters are among them by looking for, well, otter poop. >> you just pick it up. >> the team collects otter poop for genetic analysis. they document where they found it and take photos. they even have a name for this. >> pooparazzi. >> they hope it will encourage people to protect them and that fragile habitat. dan ashley. abc7 news. >> the project is looking for more otter spotters. you can learn more by heading to their website. we have a link on our website abc7news.com under "sea it on

around the weather. elsewhere dropping through the 40s. pretty cool in santa rosa with 43 los gatos and 47 san jose and just about 50 in lever more. all across the bay numbers are plummeted with 12 degrees cooler than yesterday morning in santa rosa and 7 degrees cooler in oakland, livermore and san jose. so we will keep the skies partly cloudy as you head on out this morning. then the clouds thicken this afternoon. outside chance of a shower or two throughout the later evening hours. but the rain and wind comes our way early tomorrow. right in time for the morning commute and really doesn't head on out of here until the afternoon. here's a look at our satellite and radar composite. you see getting quite active in the pacific northwest. and this is the energy. it's a piece of energy from up to the north and you will notice the speckling of the clouds. a lot of cold air associated with it. and it's going to ten to develop. high pressure is going to give way and it will allow for the cold front to sweep on through the area.

so we will start our computer animation through the overnight hours tonight and you will notice by 3:00 in the morning tomorrow there is rain in the north bay from ukiah, santa rosa, maybe some spotty showers elsewhere. here comes the front. with the front you could see anywhere from 20 do 30 miles an hour winds, especially over the east bay hills. this is 8:00 tomorrow morning. as we continue to go throughout the rest of the day, the front is well south of the bay but we will see spotty showers throughout the day. by the evening hours another system develops. so as we get into tuesday morning we will see perhaps more rain. this is not as big as the monday system. after that it looks like the storm track does lift to the north and we should see dryer and warmer conditions. anywhere from a quarter to a half inch along the peninsula. a tenth to maybe two tents in the south bay and greater amounts, up to an inch from ukiah. statewide today, pretty pleasant. the clouds favoring parts of the north coast and some rain from
